This is a response to a post at Triangulations.
The sort of holier than thou Christians (or whatever religion) who claim that only by believing just as they do can lead to salvation are truly insufferable people. They don't care if those who would suffer in accordance with their terrible beliefs are helpless children. They so badly want themselves to be special snowflakes that they are willing to become vile, hateful, intolerant people to achieve that goal.
If deities there be, then they are much more evolved than humans. They would not have egos which require worship from said humans. Fundamentalist Christians believe in a cosmic abusive parent: the Demiurge.
I had nightmares about hellfire and damnation from a vengeful God until I was nearly thirty years old. It took many years to get rid of the fears that were put into my psyche during my childhood.

I read carefully this post, Nightingale (may I call you Nightingale? It is sort of easier, and shorter) :)
Before reading this, I went to see the one in Triangulation, just to be on the safe side, not to follow a wrong idea.
I can relate to your feelings, people, of any stage in life, if they add sanctimoniously attitudes are insufferable, they are not real, and besides they deceive themselves.
It is the personal duty of those who can discern the difference between LOVE, and love, even if agnostics, to mark the inane behaviour of those that need to differentiate themselves from the rest, as you state in your post.
This is a human weakness, if you look to Judeo-Christian-Muslim tenets, you'll find the same trend. From their beginning, Judaism could lapidate you for blasphemy, Christianity invented the Crusades, and Muslim created the suicidal bombers.
All of them threaten with Eternal Damnation, a belief with no avail from any of the Liturgies.
After following several different Faiths in my walking of the world, I always found this type of believers, they are so preposterous that cannot be trusted, and youngsters must be warned and protected against them.
It is better to let them alone, slowly simmering in their own stew. Following a childish Demiurge, who proclaim Himself to be a Jealous God.
Your experience shows the dangerous these people are. But also murderers, pedophiles, thieves, et al are dangerous, we must learn to defend ourselves, and our loved ones, against all of them.
