God, Religion and Science

The following was first posted on my personal blog some years ago. For this site, Cara's, I have amended sections as my views have changed somewhat and I'd rather be as one with those of faith rather than ridicule, belittle or make fun of them. They and I both share many similarities. We both believe in love and compassion, the golden rule, and living in harmony with those we may not see eye to eye with on things 'spiritual.'. So please read this knowing that I have no empathy for organised religion but that I am sceptical, not cynical, of faith.

“Now when I talk to God you know he understands
He said stick by me and I'll be your guidin' hand
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to”
For me, God is a concept, an idea of something inexplicable, something greater than me, than us, something random, unfathomable and yet quintessentially part and parcel of the same thing that I and every other living organism are formed of. It has the power to create and yet is personality-less, it knows few boundaries; in fact, it probably knows no boundaries. It is not framed by definition in the way I am, the way humankind is or any other thing be it animal, vegetable, mineral or abstract. It has no voice lest it is the whisper of the wind, the dying of the day or the sound of stars orbiting their planets, their localised galaxies. It is shapeless, colourless and without shadow. It has no other like it. It is alone in the vastness of creation yet it knows not the value nor feels loneliness.  God is neither good nor evil for such things are only within the imaginings of men, important things for us for sure but not anywhere on God’s radar. Such is the divinity of its majesty that such things have no meaning. It is supreme, vast, minuscule, and of no mind that can be shackled to any logic other than its own. And yet, little by little, as time passes, the more we begin to understand it. Above all things, it is not mystical. It is as available and understandable as our limited understanding makes it.
"Heaven and earth and I are of the same root, the ten-thousand things and I are of one substance" - Zen Master Seng-Chao
If God had a word for the understanding we are gradually learning then that word would be science. It is, as all things are, limited by knowledge, flawed by virtue of it being a man-made tool, yet it remains God’s for God created all things and at the heart of all things, no matter whatever given name it has comes the irrevocable constraints of that which we now call science. It doesn’t fall upon me to say these things, to reiterate what is already known. Ask any Monotheist and they will tell you…” In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  They would also add …”In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.”

For now, though, and for the sake of this piece, let us accept God as a deity, as the Supreme being that from some heavenly abode spun the stars, the suns, the unfolding universe in a manner She, or He, saw fit. For now, let God be the all loving mother/father of fiction. A being who saw fit to make the birds and bees but also gave us cancer, AIDS, hurricanes, storms, tsunami’s and floods. God did not create poverty or famine, though. Let no one doubt that. Nor did God create time for the measurement of the passing of days is a man-made construct as is poverty and hunger.

There is much we have learned since those days when the Earth was formless and void. All but a few would argue that the great creator, God, did not evolve life. There are some amongst us who would argue this as yet to be disproven fact that life on Earth began billions of years ago. They would state, for they have belief and such is greater, in their minds anyway than the laws of nature which have to be, if we believe in a deity, His/Her doings. They would suggest life has only been here for thousands rather than millions of years. This, of course, is in direct conflict with God for it relies on man yet again interceding where man has no right, without proof, to go. Proof has been supplied to us by God’s Word and through His/Her allowing us to understand what was, until only one hundred and fifty years ago, beyond our capabilities.

If God created life then She/He created evolution. A supreme being would not harness itself to the laws of primitive man and only primitive man would see things in thousands, not billions. The same is true of molecules. Humankind did not invent them. A far greater power did and that power has to be that of God. That being so then we did not create Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA. It was there for all time and it took an eternity for us to understand it. Now we do. We are all children of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; we all have a right to be here, to exist in harmony with the gifts God has given us even when those things have not always been clear to us for in the end the universe, and God, is as unfolding as it should be. God reveals what He/She wants as and when we are able to understand.
Without a doubt, humankind has one shared history. We have come from the same stock, the same well-spring. Life did not begin in the freezer but a warming oven. That hotbed from which life, human life, came was what we now call Africa, most likely Ethiopia. At one stage, many ages past, we all would have been black. The evidence for this is found in our shared DNA. And as we are created in the likeness of God then God too is black.

In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created.…”  - Genesis.
Whether there is or isn’t a personal God is immaterial. There is no proof one way or the other. Religion cannot prove there is and science cannot prove there is not. History, for what it is worth, and it does reveal much, can only ever be a thing of perspectives. For those who fought in the Second World War, it involved the Germans, Italians and the Japanese. For the Japanese, the war with America started a lot earlier and the Nazi party was incidental to Japan’s anger toward America.

History reveals that there was no Moses. Nor would there have been an Abraham who took notes, transcribed them on tablets of stone. We know this from the hieroglyphs and scrolls used at the time that had there been an Abraham he would have needed a truck to carry the weight of tablets down for writing as we know it had not been invented then. As for God, Abraham and Issac, when Yahweh instructs Abraham to barbeque his first born son, then set a torch to the fruit of his loins, does anyone really think God, a loving, caring deity, could do such a thing? The child may not have been burnt, and in that, some Monotheist's tragically miss the point, but Yahweh would still be guilty of willful cruelty for he never shared his pantomime with the child before the event.

No, this tale is not how any just God would behave. It is, as John Cleese said, a case of Monotheists taking a literary work literally. It, the Tanakh, was never meant as such. They are fables wherein can be found serious wisdom. If anyone, even God, says kill your child then be assured that it is not the voice or word of God requesting such a hellish evil but something other, something lesser, something very human and not at all divine.

Science as we know it is as revealing as we are able to understand it. We did not make it up, we did not create it we merely named it. Something, or someone if you would prefer, did that. All science ever can be is a tool by which we grasp at the vague. Blame not scientists for their chill calculus. Blame yourself for having your intellect subjected to falsehoods by religious authority and in preferring false truths over sublime fact.

As far as I am concerned atheism is a reaction to Theism, one which I will look at in the next chapter. For me, the truth is far more important. Without truth we are nothing. All the fables and fictions that are set upon us like so many bats fluttering about our heads become nothing but that which gets tangled in the hair – irritants. We are better than that. Truth matters. It teaches us more than anything, even religion. Without truth we are nothing.
Fundamentalists, be they Muslim or Evangelical, are wanton individuals who, under no guidance or ordinance from God, hijack His/Her supreme authority for no better reason than they feel Her/Him inadequate. They do not seek the truth. They are uninterested in the truth. All they seek is self–gratification. This is self-evident for by their very actions they remove the one thing God has over all things, all acts, actions, thoughts and opinions – power. If I am to answer to anyone come judgement day then it will be to one ultimate being – the supreme creator.  It will not be to some knife wielding subject of their own ambitions hell bent on decapitating me. Even headless you cannot defeat a thought, you cannot defeat truth.

"There are hundreds of paths up the mountain, all leading in the same direction, so it doesn't matter which path you take. The only one wasting time is the one who runs around and around the mountain, telling everyone else that their path is wrong."  - Hindu Teaching

God as a concept, as a word that shapes something undefinable, but not a personal deity who enacts such unbelievable cruelty as according to Monotheists is still a beautiful thing. When I write I am aping gods. When we paint we are exploring gods. When we hear music it is the sound of gods. Random, cruel, unknowable, never vindictive but there - within and without us. It is with creativity, with joy, with a sense of being that the divine enters us. It is that feeling of godhead that we primates, with that singular difference to our fellow animals, feel. It is why primitive man, still only able to see that which is in front of him not realising, let alone recognising, that god's, God even, does not fit within our perceptions of what is and what isn't, creates deities in human form.

"There was always SOMETHING out there in the deep, mysterious void. IT was ONE. IT was simple when ignored and complex when observed. IT was incomprehensible and without definition. And in its complexity IT was neither “being” nor “non-being;” neither male nor female. IT was without form, and without need of sustenance of any kind. IT knew neither time nor space and yet IT birthed all “being” as yin and all “non-being” as yang. IT was TAO… the Way of Things… the eternal source and sustainer of all things.
…And then there was time and sequence of events, and yin and yang gave birth to the illusion of all division and “being.”
When men began to divide things by naming them, many named IT “God” and gave IT cultural names.
And thus it came to be that…
There are as many names for God as there are tongues to speak them.
There are as many faces of God as there are eyes to behold them.
There are as many paths to God as there are feet to walk them.
No name is the complete name.
No face is the complete face.
No path is the complete path
."

Live in the now

"Do memories cause you pain?
Practice being in the present moment.
Turn your attention to the here and now.
Notice that your thoughts subside when you focus on the present.
As your thoughts quiet, so, too, the memories.
Because memories are, in essence, thoughts."

The Cheese Grates It: The Bullshit of Calories In Calories Out and Thin Equals Healthy

I want to smack everyone who says "you just need to eat less and exercise more" upside the head. I doubt I even eat 2000 calories most days, which is the average calorie intake for adults.
Most of the time, I don't have the money to be able to eat three meals a day. I'm still fat, and I'm pretty sure I always will be unless I get extremely sick, such as my great grandmother did with acute myelogenous leukemia. I'm rather sure she was diabetic and hypothyroid and probably had PCOS as well, just by looking at her face.
She was never diagnosed as such, but she tended to crave sweets, which is a sign of insulin resistance. Of course, all my family could ever talk about was how fat she was. Why the fuck is everyone so obsessed with other people's bodies? Also, she lost 105 pounds within the space of a year, and then she died. Guess that's a triumph right there--she had a thin body to put into the casket.

He Knows My Name (Lyrics) Francesca Battistelli If We're Honest

The Cheese Grates It: Sometimes Fiction Goes too Far

SPOILERS!!!!!
This goes under some anti tags, not because I hate the show or the characters, but because I am going to say some things which are critical of certain events which transpired during a certain episode of the show.
I just got around to starting Season 7 of The Walking Dead, and I won’t be watching again for a while.
I am one of those people who thinks that the show went too far with the level of violence depicted in this episode.
Some people argue that the level of violence was necessary to show what a shitty, horrible, evil person Negan is, and that part of what happened to Glenn was shown in the comic so they simply translated that to the screen.
I think that it would be possible to show that Negan is a brutal psychopath without showing every blow as his victim’s head is turned into an unrecognizable paste.
Some people counter assertions such as mine with the old “but REALISM!!!111!!!” chestnut.
Dude or dudette, it is a show about zombies taking over the world. Zombies aren’t real. I watch shows like The Walking Dead because I want to escape from reality, not to see Horrible Shit That Actually Could Happen shoved in my face.
I’m not squeamish when it comes to gore, but I am a bit picky about my gore.
I’m not bothered by hyperviolence, such as is shown in video games. Everyone should watch Jim Sterling’s explanation of the ways in which video game violence is unrealistic.

I don’t mind having human aggressors brought into the mix in a show such as The Walking Dead. It does give a certain necessary element of realism to prevent the program from becoming a 45 minute long dramatized version of a video game. There have been human villains on the Walking Dead prior to Negan.
I’m not someone who is easily unsettled by blood. I’m a nurse who was also previously trained as an EMT. I probably have a higher tolerance for dealing with actual blood than the majority of people. When I was attending EMT training classes, my schedule tended to go a little bit something like this: Rush out of work, hurry down the highway about 20 miles, grab something through the drive through window, eat it in class while watching gruesome footage from accidents.
It wasn’t that I didn’t care about the victims of said accidents. However, I had developed a certain level of stoicism regarding such footage, because there was a possibility that one day I might have to deal with incidents of this nature up close and in person.
Thus, I am not easily fazed by gore.
I don’t enjoy movies such as “Saw.” I dislike splatter films and torture porn. I like my violence with a touch of unreality. I enjoy seeing characters going up against monsters, i.e. Xenomorphs and zombies. There is usually a human (or humanoid) antagonist in such stories. I’m fine with that as well.
An element of hyperviolence with a character such as Negan is fitting. To say that Negan is not a nice guy is the understatement of the ages. I’m fine with that. Yes, Negan should be nasty--really nasty. That being said, the creators of The Walking Dead went too far during Episode 1 of Season 7.
It was not necessary to show blow after blow of the barb-wire wrapped bat striking the head of the victim.
Yes, I’m aware that no-one was actually harmed during the filming of these scenes and that the gore was all special effects. I nonetheless feel that it went too far.
I would never have watched The Walking Dead again had there been such a scene during the first episode. To reiterate, I don’t like torture porn or splatter movies.
There are real serial killers and psychopaths who devastate the lives of not only their victims but their victims’ families. I saw the footage filmed by Leonard Lake and Charles Ng psychologically torturing their victims before killing them. This is not entertainment.
There are real warlords who brutally torture and murder their victims. I read that during the Rwanda genocide, the skin from victims’ genitals was sometimes nailed to trees. Family members were sometimes tortured in view of one another by despots such as Pol Pot.
This shit happens in real life. So, yes, you can establish that Negan is that kind of evil bastard. Nevertheless, it is not necessary to have a graphic, gory, blow by blow depiction of his slaying of a victim to establish the nefarious nature of his character.
To recap: I am someone who is generally not bothered by hyperviolence or fantasy gore in fiction and who is trained to deal with medical emergencies, including medical emergencies involving blood and possibly bones or viscera emerging where they shouldn’t be, and I feel that the torture/murder scene in Season 7 Episode 1 of The Walking Dead was too much.
I won’t be watching The Walking Dead again for a while. At this point, I honestly wish that Glenn had been killed by walkers instead.
As a counterpoint, I do think that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a fantastic actor. His ability to switch from a hero role such as John Winchester to a villain role such as Negan seamlessly is testament to his mastery of the craft, and he deserves an award.
Personal Never Will Be Canon headcanon:
I want to see John Winchester take Negan down.

The Cheese Grates It: Express Mood Elevator to Hell, Going Down

"Crap, not this again."
Said every person with a cyclic mood disorder.
Because my bipolar disorder is of the rapid cycling variety (prevailing mood tends to change about every 2 weeks), people who don't have such a condition tend to think "oh, it's no big deal then, she'll be over it in two weeks."
However, that isn't actually how it works.
The severity of the depressive mood and the suicide ideation that comes with it vary. Sometimes I say "well, shit, here we go again, but it will pass."
Other times, the suicide ideation is extremely high.
Sometimes the suicidal thoughts are of the "I'm going to fling myself into the Grand Canyon" variety. This isn't realistic because I don't live anywhere near the Grand Canyon and I'm afraid of heights. I wouldn't be likely to top myself by flinging myself from a height.
Other times the thoughts are more dangerous because they are something that could be realistically enacted, i.e. overdosing.
I have mitigating reasons not to act on these thoughts, and if I went to the E.R. every time I had suicide ideation, I'd have to live there. Sorry to say it, but suicide hotlines are pretty much worthless for someone in my situation. Basically, you get a well-meaning (if you're lucky) person who tells you to contact 911 because you shouldn't kill yourself. I say if you're lucky because I actually had a person at one of those hotlines laugh at me, and on another occasion not know what the hell to say, tell me I should contact the local mental health center, and wish me luck. Not a lot of help there.
Anyway, yeah, it will pass, but having people say that in a dismissive way is kind of like being waist deep in quicksand and having someone say "oh, it's okay, it's only waist deep, you'll get out."
It appears to be waist deep, but if you take a step you might be in up to your neck.
It's like that.

Why I'm An Agnostic Deist: A Brief Explanation

I was a devout Catholic until I was 18 because I wanted to believe the good things about religion were true, but more and more I learned how judgmental and hateful many religious people are. The judgment and hate isn't only on Christians. I discovered quite a few very judgy Pagans and "New Age" types along the way.
Over the years I became a lot more agnostic because I felt like I didn't have any right to be so arrogant as to claim that I "KNEW" the nature of the higher powers. I don't think that our limited minds can truly understand them.
I think that to them we are developmentally like lower animals. Only an egomaniac would demand that something smaller and less developed worship it or be tortured and destroyed. Hence why I refuse to worship at the altar of any egomaniac deity.
To be clear, I do not think that the creator deity (or deities) is an egomaniac. I think it is a benevolent power (powers) although not terribly involved in the affairs of the material Universe.

NaPoWriMo 2017: Day 15: M is for Medium

The medium has always been misunderstood
People always said she was crazy
People said that she's no good
She should get a job and stop being lazy

Talking to ghosts was wrong, they said
We think she worships the devil
Either that or it's all in her head
We think that she is evil

She tried to pray the ghosts away
But they became her friends
So she allowed them to stay
Though she sometimes feared it was all just pretend

She tried to seek out others like herself
Only to discover to her dismay
That there was simply nobody else
Nobody else who wanted to play

"Why do you make friends with the ghosts?"
The other psychics scoffed
"You shouldn't be their host"
"You need to send them right off"

The medium thought that maybe
If she sent the spirits away
She could find a husband and have babies
And be a good and normal person each day

But her romances never worked out
And her friends just wanted to drink
She was left alone with her sorrow and doubt
And too much time to think

She considered taking her life
 Because she felt so lost
She had failed at being a wife
She was alone and cast off

Her world was too sad and dark
So she let the spirits return
Ignoring others' callous remarks
About how she'd go to hell and burn

Sometimes she wonders if she is insane
To believe she can sense the ghosts
But the ghosts love her and sing the refrain
"We think that she is the most!"

For my friend and writing sister Cie
From Psychopants
(Blooming Psycho)
And maybe some ghosts
I'm glad I know you
And the ghosts are glad they do too

I Praise You Lord with the Hands You've Made - Donut Man

I stumbled across this and wanted to share it because it's kind of catchy and it reminded me of being a kid in Sunday school.
Sometimes I wish I could go back to being that innocent again, laughing and smiling and playing with the other kids. Before MS, before losing my husband, before everything.
We get little tidbits down here. I was a kid again for a few minutes.

The Cheese Grates It: The Old Tired Wal-Mart Gag

So, this was in an acquaintance's feed, and I was livid. I stated that I didn't find it the least bit funny as this is the sort of thing that someone with dementia or a severe mental illness might do. I also stated that the "Wal Mart" stereotype was pretty old and tired. In the area where I live, Wal Mart is one of the few options. You know who goes to Wal Mart in my area? People. Just...people. Maybe because I'm not a judgmental douchebag I don't pay them much mind, but nobody has ever really stood out.

This image was also upsetting to me as dementia has had a strong impact on my life in the past several years in particular. I used to work with geriatric patients but had to get out of the field because it was becoming too personal. My father had vascular dementia at the time of his death. My aunt has Alzheimer's and my uncle is trying to continue caring for her, but it's becoming more and more difficult. She spends much of the night dressing and undressing repeatedly and trying doors to see if she can get in or out.

Dementia also began robbing someone not related but still very dear to me of his mind when he was only 55 years old. He now remembers nothing about his life, including those he was close to.
So I don't find this sort of thing amusing. There is something amiss with this person's mind. They are almost certainly living in poverty. None of these things are funny.

The person who posted that crap also posted this and several others. I commented, "yep, because big people and handicapped people shouldn't be allowed to have friends or fun." Then I unfriended her shallow ass.
We all know that being my Facebook friend is a special privilege reserved only for the elite.
Yeah, right.
In truth, it's fairly hard to piss me off enough to get unfriended. I unfollowed a number of people due to their Lord Dampnut support but didn't unfriend them.
However, if you think it's totes hilarious to post demeaning images of an impoverished elderly person who obviously has a severe cognitive or psychiatric impairment and caption it with something along the lines of "hurr hurr hurr, Wal Mart shoppers, amirite?"
...and then when someone states that it really is not funny to ridicule people with dementia or severe psychiatric illness or people living in poverty...
you follow that so hilarious image up with images ridiculing fat people and handicapped people because hurr hurr hurr Wal Mart shoppers, amirite?
You can bet I'm gonna unfriend your unsympathetic, bullying ass.

We have plenty of shitty politicians whose awful policies and behaviors we can ridicule from sunup to sundown. Ridiculing the mentally and physically impaired and those whose bodies are viewed as unattractive in a society which has a very narrow view of beauty is quite simply a crappy thing to do, and I am not going to associate with the sorts of people whose idea of a good time is belittling others, especially those whose lives are hellish on a daily basis anyway.

Mystery to Me

I often wonder at where we came from. The idea that we're just a sad bunch of soulless cells milling about the world body waiting to die is far too depressing, but the thought that we are all being scrutinized by an abusive parent for a determination whether we should be allowed to spend eternity in luxury or torment based on how well we kowtowed is awful as well. I don't think either of these is correct, myself.

The Cheese Grates It: Listen To Your Body, Not the Diet Industry

Image purchased from 123rf.com

While people should always have the autonomy to do as they see fit with their own bodies, I learned after many years of dieting, self-loathing, and eating disorders that reduction dieting a) does not work long term in most cases and only benefits the multi-billion dollar diet industry, and b) the majority of dieters gain back more weight than they originally lost. I literally had to stop dieting to keep myself from getting heavier.
I am very glad I found Health at Every Size at age 46. I wish I had found it sooner. 34 years of yo-yo dieting, bulimia, and self-loathing had taken a terrible toll on both my body and my psyche.
As a diabetic, I have to be mindful of carbohydrate intake, but I have found that glycemic impact is more important than the actual number of carbohydrates ingested. For instance, I don't tend to have a problem with beans, potatoes, corn or bread in moderation, but rice spikes my blood sugar. Everybody is different with this.
Regarding cravings, prior to treating my diabetes, I was ravenously hungry much of the time and, in our size-shaming culture, many doctors give the terrible advice of just ignoring the cravings. If a person has cravings, there is a reason for it. Your body isn't getting something it wants, and trying to shut it up by ignoring the hunger isn't healthy.
In my case, my body wasn't recognizing its own insulin anymore. Insulin resistance can both cause weight gain and make it difficult to lose weight. Anyone who is experiencing extreme, insatiable hunger should have their blood sugar and A1C checked rather than telling themselves they need more Won't Power to stick with their calorie count. Also, you can't eat yourself into diabetes, even if you eat nothing but cake all day every day unless you have the genetic trigger for diabetes.
I wish you well.

Diabetes PSA

If you’re new to having to deal with diabetes, I want to offer you a virtual hug and let you know that you’re not alone. Particularly for type 2 diabetics, you may be wondering, as I did, “what did I do to cause this? Did I eat too much sugar? If I were thinner, would I not have gotten diabetes?”
Here’s what you did. You had the gene that triggers diabetes. People of all sizes get diabetes, and you can’t cause yourself to develop diabetes by eating too much sugar. Developing type 2 diabetes becomes more likely as a person ages. I am a proponent of the Health At Every Size approach (HAES) rather than a size normative approach. The number you need to be concerned with is the one on your glucose meter.
Many people are afraid that the needles we have to use to inject insulin or obtain a blood sample are going to hurt. The insulin needles are very small and I hardly feel them at all. A fantastic tip I learned from a friend is to inject into a stretch mark on your abdomen and you likely won’t even feel it. If you’re a woman who has had children, you likely have a few of these. Even if you don’t have any stretch marks, you aren’t going to feel much in the way of a stick. It isn’t like a vaccination, which has to go into the muscle. An insulin needle only has to reach the subcutaneous layer of fat, which even very thin people possess. I’ve experienced more pain plucking unwanted facial hair than I ever have injecting insulin.
Another thing to do is to take the insulin out of the refrigerator 1-2 hours before injecting it. Cold insulin can sting a little. Room temperature insulin doesn’t.
Modern blood testing strips require only a small amount of blood to get a reading. Obtaining the blood sample is somewhat more painful than injecting insulin, but is far from unbearable. I experience less pain from obtaining my blood sample than I do from removing the peach fuzz that likes to invade my upper lip. I test on the heel of my palm rather than my fingers. Most modern lancing devices come with a special cap so you can choose alternate site testing.
If you have been prescribed insulin, Google the name of the insulin’s manufacturer to see if they have a discount program. I am able to get my Lantus pens for $10 copay with their discount card. Otherwise, the cost would be $435 for five pens. If you’re really rich, that may be pocket change. For me, it’s a month’s worth of car payment, and I need my car.
Diabetes is a pain in the ass and it is a serious disease. However, I want to encourage you not to give up hope. You can do this!

Love,
Cie

Note: Not everyone will experience all of the symptoms depicted in the following PSA. It’s just a guideline.
For instance, in my case, always being tired didn’t trigger alarm, because I have hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia, which both contribute to fatigue. I didn’t experience an increase in yeast infections. I didn’t and still don’t have problems with wounds that don’t heal or neuropathy in my feet. I’m not a very sexual person in the first place, and my hand wasn’t complaining about my lack of interest in sex.
I was, however, constantly hungry and thirsty, I had to pee all the time, and I experienced blurred vision after meals.

NaPoWriMo 2017: Day 1: Angel

Did angels
Fall to Earth
Long ago?
Left behind
Did their minds
Forget their divinity
Are there souls
Who try to remember
Lifetime after lifetime
What we once were
Is this why we suffer
Why we feel too much
And sometimes
Let others use
And abuse us
Will we one day remember
And spread our wings again
Or are we
Forever
Lost?

The Cheese Grates It: Victor and Me

At first glance, you wouldn’t think that Victor Henriksen and I have anything in common.
Victor is a tough FBI agent who takes on the most dangerous criminals.
I am a nurse who works with medically fragile children.
Victor can definitely kick an ass or two.
My body has so many things going wrong with it that it’s getting to the point where the only thing “tough” about me is my fuck you attitude and the consistency of my flesh.
However, Victor and I do have something in common nonetheless, and here it is.

“My job is boring. It’s frustrating. You work three years for one break, and then maybe you can save a few people…maybe. That’s the payoff...So yeah, sign me up for that big frosty mug of wasting my damn life.”

The nursing I do is not “sexy” nursing. It is not high energy, racing to save life and limb as quickly as possible ER nursing, although at any moment in usually stable case, I may have to drop everything and attempt to do just that.
The nursing I do involves caring for those with chronic conditions. I clean up a lot of poop, snot, and vomit. The patient I’m working with currently has a very rare congenital disease. This disease is terminal, but nobody knows how long this kid has because he is literally the oldest living person with the disease. Most kids who have this disease die before their fifth birthday. My patient will be twelve this year.
This kind of nursing is notoriously low paid. Home care nurses do not get paid time off. If I take a day off, it’s always on my dime. A lot of home care agencies treat their nurses like crap. The previous agency I was with asked me to work 60 hour weeks consistently and would have been fine with having me work a 72 hour week, but I drew the line. They had me work when I was sick. There was always the emotional blackmail of “the family really needs you.” Then when the inevitable happened and I fell asleep during a shift, both the family and the agency were more than happy to fuck me over.
You hear about the saintly nurse for whom the work isn’t about the money, it’s about the caring. I do care very much about every patient I’ve ever worked with. However, in many ways being in the medical profession is a big frosty mug of wasting my damn life, and no, it is not an option to just change jobs or to go back to school. I don’t know how to do anything else and nobody’s going to pay my way while I’m trying to get an education in some other profession. I can’t take the cut in pay to go work at a hipster cafe or new age book shop while I try to figure out my life’s purpose.
So that’s what Victor and I have in common. We both work in noble professions and have fuck all to show for it when the day is done.
I probably won’t die by being blown up, though. I’m guessing my kidneys will shoot the moon one of these days (fuck you diabetes) and I’ll be poisoned by my body’s own waste. Good times!
