Sunrise Ceremony

“The land is my mother. Like a human mother, the land gives us protection, enjoyment and provides our needs – economic, social and religious. We have a human relationship with the land: Mother, daughter, son. When the land is taken from us or destroyed, we feel hurt because we belong to the land and we are part of it.” – Djinyini Gondarra

"Every seed is awakened and so is all animal life. It is through this mysterious power that we too have our being and we, therefore, yield to our animal neighbors the same right as ourselves, to inhabit this land." - Sitting Bull

"Never take over the world to tamper with it. Those who want to tamper with it are not fit to take over the world." - Tao

"So to breathe in and be aware of your body and look deeply into it and realise you are the Earth and your consciousness is also the consciousness of the earth. Not to cut the tree not to pollute the water, that is not enough."  - Thich Nhat Hanh

"Our task must be to free ourselves, by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and it’s beauty.”-Albert Einstein

“We have a mother, and that mother is our territories, our common home of all the Indigenous peoples and everyone who inhabits this earth” – Maximiliano Ferrer

Knowing something is nothing like understanding the thing you think you know about. Life isn't just life as lived by humankind. Life is life beyond the conceptual thinking of humans. Life isn't small nor is it large for only humans visualise things in sizes. Atoms are small. You don't need to know your shoe size to understand you have feet. You don't need to know your shoe size to know you can walk. Life enters us as when we are conceived. Life stays with us when we are born. Life stays with us when the body dies. Living is what connects us to life. a life lived on the planet we are part of. There is no better adage than 'home sweet home.' Earth is home.

Passion

Do not be afraid of that word `passion’.

Most religious books, most gurus, swamis, leaders,

and all the rest of them, say “Don’t have passion”.

But if you have no passion, how can you be sensitive to

the ugly, to the beautiful, to the whispering leaves, to the sunset,

to a smile, to a cry? How can you be sensitive without a sense of passion

in which there is abandonment? Sirs, please listen to me, and do not

ask how to acquire passion. I know you are all passionate enough in getting a

good job, or hating some poor chap, or being jealous of someone; but

I am talking of something entirely different: a passion that loves.

Love is a state in which there is no `me; love is a state in which

there is no condemnation, no saying that sex is right or wrong, that

this is good and something else is bad. Love is none of these

contradictory things. Contradiction does not exist in love. And how

can one love if one is not passionate? Without passion, how can one

be sensitive? To be sensitive is to feel your neighbor sitting next

to you; it is to see the ugliness of the town with its squalor, its

filth, its poverty, and to see the beauty of the river, the sea, the

sky. If you are not passionate, how can you be sensitive to all

that? How can you feel a smile, a tear? Love, I assure you, is

passion.

True Religion Doesn't Have Labels or Sides

“The question has often been asked; Is Buddhism a religion or a philosophy? It does not matter what you call it. Buddhism remains what it is whatever label you may put on it. The label is immaterial. Even the label 'Buddhism' which we give to the teachings of the Buddha is of little importance. The name one gives is inessential.... In the same way Truth needs no label: it is neither Buddhist, Christian, Hindu nor Moslem. It is not the monopoly of anybody. Sectarian labels are a hindrance to the independent understanding of Truth, and they produce harmful prejudices in men's minds.” – Walpola Rahula

The parable of The Good Samaritan exemplifies true religion. A person is injured very badly having been beaten and is left half-dead on the road. Another person bearing a label which thought has manufactured arrives sees the injured person and then walks on leaving the injured to their fate. Another person arrives. Another person with a label, a concept manufactured by humans, arrives. They see the other person beaten near to death and then go on their way. A third person arrives bearing yet another label. This persons' label, the side he has been falsely placed within, makes him a bitter enemy of the others with their labels. Their groups which are an invention. This third-person sees no labels. Does not recognise a fellow human as belonging to anything apart from humanity. This third person is a religious person for he accepts all humans are of one species, one race. This third-person helps the one left to die.

All labels are unnecessary. All labels are human-made. Labels create division. That division has people taking sides. There are no sides. There is only the truth. There is only one true religion.

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.” – Marcus Aurelius

Whit Sunday

Rather than dismiss all and every day certain faiths celebrate, I would rather join in that celebration even if my path hasn't taken me down that particular route. The whole point of celebrating anything is for everybody, no matter their way, to join in with respect and love for our fellows.  If you encounter a celebration you find doesn't follow the Golden Rule then simply don't celebrate it.

Whit Sunday is a Christian day of celebrating when the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus' disciples. For me, that means becoming aware. For the brothers and sisters who are Christian, the meaning is different. My mum always called today Whitsun. A sort of shortened version of Whit Sunday which is fact the Pentecost. Pagan's celebrated Beltane. Which bears similarities even though that day is on the first of May. Therefore I shall celebrate Whit Sunday as I missed the first of May.

Happy Pentecost.

God Bless

Today is another Sunday, a day when Christians gather in worship of the Sabbath. It is a fine day to worship even if the day itself, the naming of it, has nothing to do with God but everything to do with man. All the same, it is a fine day to gather and praise the God of their faith.

Jews worship the Shabbat. From Friday evening to Saturday evening. For Jews, it is time without television or telephones, without work or stress. Of calm in observance of God.

Muslims prefer Friday as their day of worship, of praise to Allah. Three different days of the week. Three days by which to pay respect to the God of love. Of peace and of compassion. Three days out of seven all of which deserve praise to God, to Allah unless you live in Gaza.

God doesn't fire missiles. God doesn't bomb. God doesn't fire bullets. God doesn't kill his people. God doesn't divide his people into nation-states. Jews don't 'mow the lawn.' Communities don't desire wars or conflicts. Nation-states, their administration's do though. Administrations, and opposition parties

The bombs are falling on Gaza. Innocent people are dying. Men, women and children are dying. This is not the way of Judaism. This is not the way of Islam. It isn't the way of  Christianity. This is the way of governments and of militancy. It certainly isn't the way of God.

If Sunday is a day of reverence then so is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday too. After all, "God has no religion." - Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

Living in the Present Moment

Dealing with the facts and not the fictions, ask only these questions.

Question one.

Am I going to die? The answer is not a possibility not even probability but a resounding yes, we all are going to die at some point in our lives.

Question two.

If we were to converse is either one of us dead? The speaker or the listener? If no then you are very much alive as is the speaker. Alive in the only moment that exists, now.

Following recent events, I am very much alive. I am alive now. Therefore I love now. See now. Hear now. Laugh now. Whatever may occur hasn't happened. If and when it does it will be in the present not the past nor the future. Whatever may happen, happens only in the present and at present I am alive. There is only ever the present moment.

Truth and the Guru

Whilst waiting for a new saviour, the student sought the truth from another. The other held truth the way a bank robber wields a gun. The other fired blanks with machine-gun rapidity.  Not one of his bullets hit the target. His truth was his truth therefore his version of the truth but not the truth. The other said he was a guru. He said the saviour was due and that the student should await the saviour's arrival. The student smiled, thanked the one who called himself a guru then left. The truth patently didn't come via a guru nor that of a saviour.

Sunday Blessing

Humankind did not invent days. That was a creation of nature. The sun sets. The sun rises. In between the two darkness descends. It is not darkness to be scared off. It holds no monsters. The only monsters are those of the imagination. Humankind made monsters but not days.

All the days contain the same message. A new day has dawned. A new day of living. A new day is the first day of the rest of my life. The names of the days come from the active minds of humans who name everything as they have the greatest animal brains. If their actions were not so often appalling I would humbly suggest that humans are angels. That as the smartest ape on the planet we have a purpose. That purpose isn't to create another concept, that of money, not that having money is bad, just the worshipping of it. Humankind as angels does have a purpose. To ensure their own survival and that of the home they share and by doing so all life on our homeworld.

The days' names come from our varied cultures. My culture is of the island I live on. Not the nation-state which is a concept created manufacturing control but the culture that named the day I was born on, Thor's day. The culture that has shires, hundred moots, "After you on the bus." I love my culture. Like all cultures it is at its best when it mixes with others. From that mix evolves another culture. Curry. Reggae. "Are you guys okay?"

Today is Sunday. A day named after the Sun. A sun god maybe. Helios? For me, Sunday remains the day, not so much of rest but of family. Family is community. From the community comes culture. Sunday is not "tired and grey." That Sunday is of the mind. A mind that is captive to itself. Today is Sunday. Another day to be alive on. Another day that is the first day of the rest of our lives.

Happy Sunday.

A Vagrant God

Some years ago now, I wrote a short story called "A Vagrant God." I liked the story. I was pleased with what I wrote. Like most of my stuff, it was never published. I don't think it ever will be either not that I think now it should. The one bit I still like, which I have amended here, is the opening of the story. As I say it is altered now. It is my take on what God the deity is and what happened to God when organised religion manacled God to their logic. I hope no Jewish, Christian or Muslim friends will be offended. I am not out to upset anyone least of all those whose paths may be different but whose destination is the same.

A Vagrant God

god went walkabouts. she just packed up her stuff and went. nobody knows exactly where she went but she is gone. gone the way of legends. gone the way of myth. gone. somewhere else. somewhere far away. god doesn't get lonely like you and me. she doesn't feel the hollow pangs of sorrow gnawing like a rat at her stomach lining. she doesn't feel the desolation of guilt hanging heavy in the noise of her mind. she left her hairbrush and her box of trinkets. left her lacy gloves of cloud. left them all behind her and went. the girls and boys in heaven found them. they had no time for bric-a-brac. they threw them over the edge of the sky. watched them fall like crystallised raindrops. falling to earth in a clatter of pin pricks. shards of diamonds. a splash of jewels down onto the heads of peasants and paupers. some paupers are smarter than others. a collective. a co-operative. a conglomerate. saints to sinners. paupers to princes. the men of tungsten and foil opened a stall. selling bits of rope and truth. the men of wood and brass opened a shop. selling the promise of perpetual youth. slices of heaven cheap at half the price. neatly wrapped and easily swallowed. and it came to pass. through the ticking of time. through the vaudeville of ritual. through the denial of faith. that peasants and paupers, proprietors and princelings bought salvation with coins and corruption and made a new god. a god of muscle. a god of stealth. a god of iron with a will of stone. a phallus in blue jeans.

Endless Without Demands

If I give you all the mangoes hanging from my mango tree

Would you give me all your love now hidden deep from me?

If I bought you endless flowers to stand upon your window sill

Would you give me all your hours ticking by so endlessly?

If I promise that I will purchase all the sands upon the shore

Would you let my love enter your window then return love out your door?

If I wear a suit of colours braided and stitched as you adore

Would you give me all your love like you never ever have before?

All this love I hold inside me is a love that is all for you

All this love I regularly give you never returns what is true

"The river flows from an endless source always arriving at my door

"Yet water flows sometimes in one direction lapping at the sandy shore

"Water runs through rocky mountains, over oceans that it commands

"Love is like that endless river, given freely with no demands."

What's in a name?

No sooner than you differentiate between one human being and another, be it hair colour, the shape of the nose, the size of the eye, the way the chin shapes the jaw, the skin tone, size of the ears, whether they are blonde or blond or brunette or brown, auburn or ginger-haired you have lost the innate sense of being human once you see a label rather than another person. Once you seek what you or others have told you is either the good or bad in another, you have accepted the ability to make a judgement which will weaken your minds ability to think for itself as the mind has accepted a mechanical method of dividing what is into convenient groups of what isn't.

"As soon as you concern yourself with the 'good' and 'bad' of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others weaken and defeat you." Morihei Ueshiba

One Love - One World - One Life

We writhe as we wonder who attaches the division implicit in our minds. We settle for division as it excuses us from being part of a collective as we are told we are individual, or that we are somehow different from others. An individual is a thing that exists of itself, as an entity, a being therefore separate from others. This simply is untrue, incorrect, misleading and allowing. It allows us to believe we, that is the person, the person who is a character with their personality is not part of a whole. Is not black, not from this or that tribe or that nationality. Again, this is simply untrue. We know without reservation, with unassailable and empirical proof that we consist of the same building blocks that all life is made of be we white, black or ginger.

Many of us shy away from religion. We shouldn't. Many of us dislike the manner in which some religions have hijacked faith the better to control the minds of the faithful. Those who trust in the views of those restricting religion in a way those few have decided to lead them. The word religion, it's Latin source, the root word from which the word religion comes from is "Re-Ligare" which means to 'bind,' 'to connect', to be holly. And holly is connected to holiness which comes from holistic which comes from whole, being whole, to be one. The implication is that to be religious is to be one, to be part of a collective.

The people starving in so many areas of our world live in poverty. They are not them they are us. When they starve we assuage our hunger by feeding ourselves which is much like eating the food off your table but not giving any to your brothers or sisters. We are one.

There are now 2464 animals facing extinction compared to the 854 in 1998. They are not them they are part of the whole, the one. As the human species multiply so we hairless apes move into areas leaving the other animals without habitat. We build houses, industry and then agriculture to support those humans that have invaded areas fit only for the animals we have driven out. If that is not enough the human-ape then poaches or illegally traffic our fellow animals for money. Which is like selling your neighbour or cousins or family into slavery. We are one.

Being the smartest animal on this planet isn't it alarming how self-centred we are? How we neglect our intelligence in favour of short term superiority. Being one does not seem to appear on the human radar. Then comes along a pandemic, a pandemic which we will control if not beat. Nature doesn't think like humans. It doesn't react like humans. It simply responds to the imbalance humans have created. Is it any wonder some humans think nature is fighting back? We are one. When will we act as one and start channelling our knowledge then changing the conceptual world we have made as we are ruining the reality?

We are one.

Greta Thunberg - Climate Change

The voice we hear is  a young voice. It comes from a young woman. The words we hear are those spoken before by many other voices with the same words. The perspective has changed with the passgage of time. The voice now is the voice of youth. A youth desperately disenfranchished with what it sees. The voice is no different for the words uttered sixty years ago had equally young voices to whisper them. Words largely ignored. Now those words, timeless pearls of wisdom, return to haunt us. Voices change as new bodies, new mouths arrive to speak the words of the eternal. There is eternity but we don't have eternity to change. We only have what we have always had ...  now. We need to change now. The clock doesn't wait patiently. It just keeps ticking. Each second, each minute, each hour of each day is passing. We only have now to change what will last well into the probability of better days, of a probable future. We only have now. Now to change. For the silent passage of the albatross.

Hope. Dreams. Life... Love: Saturday Sample and Weekend Writing Warriors: Purp...

Hope. Dreams. Life... Love: Saturday Sample and Weekend Writing Warriors: Purp...: This week I'm starting a few excerpts from my Wild Rose Press release, Purple Heart. Purple Heart is available at  http://amzn.to/2cuW4r...

Back in the early 1970s, I enjoyed reading a series of war comics that were created by a World War II veteran. At the end of each story, he always put a panel saying "War No More." I don't think that anyone can come away from combat with scars either visible or invisible.

Tom Moore

Like water. Remorseless. Indefatigable. A silent force that keeps on going in spite of the apparent forces hindering it. Not a wave nor tidal surf but constant like the ocean. The power of nature inherent in us all manifested with unwavering courage. Whenever faced with a foe we cannot know, believe we cannot defeat, there arrive the indomitable likes of Captain. Colonel. Sir Tom Moore. God bless him.

It's So Big Isn't it?

It's so big, isn't it? You really can't quantify it. We catch it first when young coming from our parents, maybe our family, maybe friends. Our communities may not confess it but it is so big they to are caught within its embrace. Love is a spectrum. It starts with respect before turning into admiration and, just as those feelings settle down within us so that in turn presents as affection then as a greater leap of the intangible flows out as love.

Love of friends, of family, of music, of poetry, of film, books, walking in the woods and fields, listening to the radio, watching talk shows, sitting in the sun, meditating, playing with your children, then your grandchildren. Like an endless wave rising then falling so love in all its aspects blesses us. It isn't hope, for to have hope you need a future for hope to have a reason for being and a probability isn't enough and anyway, where is the future? You can't see it. You can't touch it, or taste it you can only surmise it,  to believe in it. It is nothing more than a maybe. There is no future when you are in the present. Love is now. It highlights the past with memory, illuminating recall of what was, what will always was but now gone. Death doesn't destroy love even if death takes those away from us who we love so dearly. That is loss, our loss, but not the loss of love for the love you held, and hold for those you loved still remains.  Death cannot steal love.

It's so big, isn't it? You don't need to belive in love any more than you do fear for both are felt as instinctive emotions. Not the romantic love although that is beautiful, not the Ero's but the unconditional love one has for a child. Not the self-serving love that says if I love you what will I get in return, what kind of love is that? A bargain made with the ego as the arbitrator. But the love that loves for the sake of loving. Forgiving of errors for who doesn't make mistakes? Forgiving fallibilities and foibles. A love so big it makes the universe shiver for without love where would kinship be?

Miyamoto Musashi

The Jitté of Miyamoto Musashi's grandfather

Funny how so many voices speak with the same tongue. No matter what name you give to a particular personal practice so the meaning remains if not the same then so similar as to be family. Miyamoto Musashi was a swordsman whose legend has grown in Japanese history so that now the man is considered a saint of swordsmen.  No matter the myth the legend holds truths beyond those fragile concepts. Miyamoto Musashi was a Samurai. One who, when his lord died, became a Ronin. That is a warrior bereft of a master. Miyamoto Musashi was also a Buddhist and artist and philosopher. He authored two books which contain his thoughts and much wisdom. "The Book of Five Rings" and "Dokkodó" (The Book of Aloneness.) It is from the last book that these 21 thoughts come. They meet Stoicism, Tao, Zen along with regular Buddhism on the way with their philosophical thought. I think many remain true today.

1. Accept everything just the way it is.

2. Do not seek pleasure for its own sake.

3. Do not, under any circumstances, depend on a partial feeling.

4. Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world.

5. Be detached from desire your whole life long.

6. Do not regret what you have done.

7. Never be jealous.

8. Never let yourself be saddened by a separation.

9. Resentment and complaint are appropriate neither for oneself or others.

10. Do not let yourself be guided by the feeling of lust or love.

11. In all things have no preferences.

12. Be indifferent to where you live.

13. Do not pursue the taste of good food.

14. Do not hold on to possessions you no longer need.

15. Do not act following customary beliefs.

16. Do not collect weapons or practise with weapons beyond what is useful.

17. Do not fear death.

18. Do not seek to possess either goods or fiefs for your old age.

19. Respect Buddha and the gods without counting on their help.

20. You may abandon your own body but you must preserve your honour.

21. Never stray from the way.

Whatever, However, god is

It starts with not knowing. Not knowing why. Why we are here. From not knowing comes fear. Fear of not knowing. Knowing is of the known therefore of the past. We can only know either in the now or experiences gained from the past. We do not live in the past. The past is gone. The past leaves a footprint in our minds that echoes throughout our lives. The fear remains. We don't know why we are here so we invent deities. Deities like ourselves. Yet the deities we created are not as powerful as god the reality.

Our knowledge, the past experiences, tells us we create things. Humans make things therefore there must be another who made us. A supreme being like us. A supernatural being who, like us creates. This being created everything. We gave that idea, that concept a name. Therefore there are as many names for that being as there are languages to speak that concepts name. Many call that concept God. God is the name selected by many, all of whom, if they live by the Golden Rule are, welcome to believe what they chose to believe. As long as they don't break The Golden Rule what does it matter what name they select for that which is greater than us all, greater than life itself whilst being life itself?

God is a word. All words spring from the language the individual cultures created. All words are human-made. The word does not define that which the reality is. All life is god. Not the concept but the reality. If you wish to worship a deity without hurting others then worship that deity. If you don't worship any deity but allow others to do so then what harm is done? Perhaps that Vulcan saying, "Live Long and Prosper" could be altered to say "Live Long and Flourish."  I'm certain that god, however you conceive God to be, would approve.

"Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy" - Max Ehrmann

Revolution? Bye Bye Mister American Pie

Without handing out excuses for there is no excuse for inciting violence, Donald Trump is a very sick man. Again, I am not being unkind for what positive response comes from unkindness? Donald Trump patently has mental health issues. No balanced person would condone then condemn those he coerced into aggressive behaviour. No so-called leader would lead by divisive measure. A so-called leader would lead by example no matter his personal position. But of course, Donald Trump has multiple positions. Unlike Adolf Hitler who was an ideologue with a touch of the demagogue about him, Donald Trump needs to be loved, to be respected. He is a full-on demagogue. He thirsts for others to like him, to worship him, to follow in his wake. Unlike Hitler, the fascist to beat all fascists, Donald Trump uses those who think themselves far-right, who are fascist, who are white supremacists. They fulfil a need in Donald Trump's psyche. They prove to others that Donald Trump IS followed, IS loved, IS worshipped but worshipped by those who believe without a shred of data or proof that which they dislike. They have proved useful. They have also proved by their actions that the divide in America is far greater than feared.

Donald Trump should resign. That is not going to happen. No sooner had he recorded a very scripted condemnation of those who, again by their actions, were the cause of 5 deaths than he has subsequently stated he will not attend the inauguration of the democratically elected USA President. Only a mentally ill patient would flip from one foot to the other in an attempt to keep face with those who follow him. Then again, he wants to appeal to those who sit on the fence. I cannot see ho fence-sitting this time will help, besides, those fence-sitters have now climbed down and stood with the majority. Donald Trump will not resign. Impeachment? Don't make me laugh. No, too slow. Donald Trump must now be escorted from office, handed over to those who can help him before he causes more damage to innocent people and to himself.

The frightening prospect to the observer is a Civil War. A thought that sends a chill down this non-American's spine. I can't see how that will happen. Not even the Generals in charge of the military will action that. They didn't join Donald Trump's side when pretenders to be involved in the 'Black Lives Matter' protest brought civil unrest along with violence to the streets of America, I doubt they will support the self-same violent individuals now even if they pretend to be of a different stripe. Violent people need violence. The cause they suggest to belong to really doesn't matter just the brief, unpleasant outcome -violent insurgence. Civil War is on the cards but I cannot see it being allowed to happen. The trouble is for Joe Biden, he now has the toughest task of all, that of reuniting America. Of healing the divide that has been growing since the halcyon days of President Clinton. Joe Biden's task will not be an easy one. That leaves an errant President filled with spite in The Whitehouse. Donald Trump must go. He must feel the full impact of American law for no man, no matter what office or position they hold is above the law.

While Nero Tweets, the Elderly and Disabled Suffer

This post is a response to this post:

https://kalpanawrites.com/shadow

I can definitely relate to the feeling of being a shadow of my former self. In fairness, my former self was a workaholic who didn't take care of herself at all. I'm kind of surprised that I didn't end up in an early grave.

I have been waiting on a disability determination for almost a year now. That people are punished for becoming disabled is unconscionable to me. However, seeing as my country is figuratively burning while Nero tweets (or he would tweet if he hadn't been booted off Twitter at least temporarily) nobody gives a rat's hindquarters about handicapped and elderly people, I can assure you.
