NaHaiWriMo 2018 #4: Picture of the Photographer

Notes:
Images copyright Cara Hartley/The Real Cie. I allow the use of my photographs in other creative blogs with credit to me.
The person in the photograph is my 28-year-old son, Michael, who is taking photographs of some specimens at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Michael has overcome a lot of challenges in his life, and I am very proud of him. He has worked hard to manage depression and anxiety without medication, as the medications don't work for him. Although he still deals with these issues, he has developed excellent coping skills.
Psych meds work well for some people, but they don't work for everyone. In Michael's case, they don't work at all. In my case, they make me manic and psychotic, which I am usually not.
People tend to want to "fix" those who have neurological and psychological differences. Instead of trying to "fix" us, which tends to make us become defensive and shuts down conversations, try instead to understand our perspective, which opens the doors to understanding and possibility.

Good for Michael. Both you and he should be proud. There is so much prejudice in this world which all stems from the requirement for us all to fit certain stereotypes and not one of us does even though some fool themselves into thinking that is the case. Wish I could grow a beard like that. No, I wish I could grow a beard period.

It is a pretty epic beard! I hope I'm never able to grow one like that, at least not in this life. Then again, if the salary projections for bearded ladies are good, I might consider it.
Michael is highly intelligent, but he never did well in the traditional school system. My mother is disappointed because he doesn't have a Bachelor's degree. He is a very hands-on learner. If he gets a degree it will be because he cobbles a bunch of certifications together, not because he follows the standard path prescribed by most learning institutions. Honestly, I feel their way of learning is outmoded.
I'm intending to finish my Bachelor's degree in English online, strictly so I can pick up some extra work grading papers remotely and lend credence to the proofreading sideline that I've been attempting to build forever. I don't care about a piece of paper to hang on the wall, something which was very important to my parents. When I got my AS in nursing, I gave the piece of paper to them. I didn't care about it.
