The Self 2

When we started to evolve all those millennia ago, going from single-cell protoplasm through a host of unlikely and frankly unbelievable lifeforms including algae, fungus, parasites, jellyfish, amphibian, ape and finally to the animals we are today, all the emotions that natural selection gave us hasn't changed much. We may be the smartest animals on the planet but still trapped by those primitive emotions and by the thoughts generated in the mind. We clearly aren't in charge of ourselves. If we were more than half of all mental health problems wouldn't exist. That honour belongs to the way in which natural selection has left us with a host of imposed left-overs. We haven't, the great many of us that is, got to grips with what thought has done to us. Most of our thoughts are little more than societal brainwashing. A set of pre-conditioned concepts about what and who we are. We aren't who we think we are. The self we have projected isn't the self we are.

"“The Ego, however, is not who you really are. The ego is your self-image; it is your social mask; it is the role you are playing. Your social mask thrives on approval. It wants control, and it is sustained by power, because it lives in fear.”   Deepak Chopra
