The Cheese Grates It: Not My President

This is the kind of person whom that monster in the white house ridicules. This is a fat, not physically attractive woman who has made several suicide attempts during her life. This person lives with fairly severe mental illness. This person has survived sexual assault and come back from it, although she didn't think she ever would.
This person did not vote for the monster in the white house and will never refer to the monster in the white house as President.
This person always referred to all other election winners as President, whether she agreed with their politics or not.
Could you imagine any of the past Presidents of whatever party mocking disabled people or talking about women as if we are nothing but body parts? I can't, and anyone who can do those things does not represent me in any way, shape or form.
The person in the picture is me. The picture is a collage which was sent to Mr. Jared Padalecki last year for his birthday to thank him for encouraging people to always keep fighting.
I am flawed as fuck, but I will always keep fighting the bullies out there, including the ones who managed to get into the highest office in the United States.
I am not pretty, I am not smart, I am not talented. Basically, I'm not shit. But I will never be what he is. You can take that to mean I'm not rich or "successful." I take it to mean I'm not a crass, boorish bully who steps on others to get my way.
You can ridicule me for these words. You can unfriend me for my beliefs. But I will never acknowledge the Bully in Chief as my president.
For me and all the other "me's" out there, I will always keep fighting anyway.

The Cheese Grates It: Sad Sack in the Material World

It's a bright, warm day, and I feel sorry for myself.
I feel sorry for myself for having a body that's betraying me in a myriad of ways.
I feel angry at myself for feeling sorry for myself, because there are people whose bodies are doing even worse things to them, and they manage to maintain a positive attitude, where I am trying to win an award for kvetching.
For the record, I think that people who say that "a positive attitude is a choice" should be boiled in oil. There's an implication that what a person has gone through in life has no weight and that mood disorders are a "choice." Fuck that shit.
Then again, I don't want to waste my oil. Cooking oil and motor oil are both costly. I won't be boiling anyone who irritates me with annoying epithets anytime soon.
I have been feeling lately like the materialists are correct: there really is nothing beyond this miserable, shitty existence. We plod through until we die wretchedly in a nursing home, or by suicide if we can't bear the thought of existence in a nursing home. My "spirit friends" are really nothing more than me personalizing my own thoughts because I can't stand the loneliness of my existence.
For the record, I'm not saying this is true. I'm saying it's how I've been feeling.
I started feeling this way after reading an article by a materialist which postulates that we are conscious of our own existence because of entropy.
This in and of itself sounds every bit as theoretical as a belief that the personality continues to exist following the death of the body. However, nobody is ridiculing this theory as "fiction," although it very well may be.
The materialists say that people like me are delusional.
This is a terrible thing to say, but sometimes I wish I was delusional, that I could fully believe something without question or doubt, that I would kill and die for my belief. However, then I would be a devotee of The Rump, and that is a fate worse than death.
I feel sorry for myself because I feel like I'm being railroaded at work.
I know, the cure for that is to "believe in myself" and "stand up for myself."
I have never believed in myself, and "standing up for myself" could get me canned. I can't risk not having a job. I have to play this thing out carefully.
A little background on the reason why I'm feeling railroaded.
I had been working with a given patient for close to a year. There was a disagreement between the patient's mother and the homecare agency that I work for. The agency decided to discharge the patient.
The mother went to a different agency, and I have been hired on with them. The case coordinator at my current agency pitched a case to me which would give me $3 per hour more. I was also looking into starting work with an agency that works with retired nuclear and uranium workers with respiratory issues.
When I let my case coordinator know that I was looking into the new line of work so he could find a different nurse for the case he was proposing to me, he became very upset with me.
I've generally gotten on well with this person, but lately I've been seeing the Hyde part of his personality, and it's kind of scary.
Those of you who have known me for a while know that I'm an agnostic when it comes to deity. I don't believe I'm doing "God's work" with the type of work I do. If God there be, he can do his own work. I've got plenty of work to do without doing his share too.
However, I do believe in doing the right thing. (Yes, agnostics do have a conscience.) I want to be where I'm needed most, particularly if I can't be doing what I love.
My (former) patient's mother called me yesterday, asking if there were any way I could come and help out for a few hours so she could go to work. The woman is desperate. The new agency has not been particularly proactive about getting nurses for the case. Basically, I'm the only game in town.
Even though I would be back on the lower end of the salary chain at $20 per hour if I stick with this case, I feel like it's the right thing to do. This family desperately needs me. I would want for someone to care enough about me that they'd help me if I were in that situation.
I don't know what to think. I don't know what to do.
I wish I had something to take comfort in. But I don't.
It may be my karma to end up alone and full of doubt. People throw that word around a lot. However, I do have actual belief in the concept. It isn't as simple as most people make it out to be.
I'm going to get ready for work now. I haven't eaten all day, so I need to scare up some food, and also something to take with me for the 12-14 hours I'll be working tonight.
For the record, I use the term "materialist" rather than atheist to describe individuals who believe that the material realm is the be all and end all. There are atheists (people who do not believe in a deity or deities) who do believe in what might be termed "metaphysical" phenomena. They are rare, but they exist.

God

What is God? Not who but what?

"Ehyeh asher Ehyeh"

"I am that what I am."

The Jews had many names for Him. Tetragrammaton, YHVH was one or Yahweh when Anglicized. In the Torah, the name is written as יהוה. Orthodox Jews will not utter the name as it is forbidden. The name Tetragrammaton may be derived from a verb that means "to be", "to exist", "to cause to become", or "to come to pass". It is not a name as such. It is a word that best sums up the unknowable, the eternal.

Zoroastrianism is an older faith than Judaism. Like Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism it is a monotheistic religion. The Zoroastrian God also has many names, Ahura Mazda,  OhrmazdAhuramazdaHourmazdHormazdHarzoo, and Hurmuz but is chiefly known as Ahura Mazda which literally means "mighty wisdom." Again, this is not a name in the manner we think of names but a device by which a thing unknowable can be identified.

For many God is the supreme creator, a deity, an invisible presence, one who manufactured life and all of existence. For some reason this God is always presented as a father figure, a male who created everything yet is a non-interventionist deity. He is omniscience, omnipotent, omnipresent and omnibenevolent. Quite why God is meant to be male I have never understood as the powers ascribed Him seem feminine not masculine. Of course, in recent years, with the rise of feminism, and for the sake of being politically correct, there are those who now suggest God is sexless.

For me, this suggests God is but a name for something greater than ourselves. It seems as if, without my being patronising, that God is little more than primitive man's attempt to define a thing that is undefinable into something he and his fellows could understand. In other words, God as a deity is a manifestation of man; man at his ultimate best it has to be said, man without his inherent frailties or flaws.

God as a concept of that which is eternal, of that which is greater than mankind, greater than yet part of all creation makes perfect sense in my mind. It brings me back to my much-used phrase, "God, Science, Nature - one and the same thing."

It is easy to see why our forebears would have thought that for life to exist it would have taken someone to create it for wasn't that how things worked for them in the everyday routine of their lives? A stone mason carved bricks to make houses; a wheelwright made wheels so that wains could travel on roads; a blacksmith made horseshoes so that horses could be shod. In everything that was designed, it took a great designer to make it. In the same way, it is easy to see why they applied magic and mysticism to all and anything they did not comprehend. Some still do.

This truth holds with all creation. The universe and our place within it was designed but by a logic far superior to that of our ancient ancestors. How would they conceive of evolution? It was beyond their understanding. Only a thing greater than they could have constructed such a method. Only the thing they referred to as God was capable of such a complex feat. And their word for that Great Creator was God but a word it remains, a concept by which we, having existed for thousands of years, have taken so long to understand.

If God created everything and "God" certainly, in the abstract sense, did then we all are subject to the same laws as "God." That question again - What is God? Not who but what?

God is everything yet God is no one. God is nature. God is evolution. God is science. God is us and we are one with God. God is just a word we used and still use to shape out thoughts for such a multiplex, composite force. God is a concept. God is a reality. God is not a father or mother figure. God is not a deity. God merely is and we are a part of God as much as God is a part of us. We have one chance in life to love ourselves as well as our fellows. Recognizing we are inseparable from 'God' is the first step to self-awareness which in turn is the first step to changing the world.

Recently the UK voted to leave the EU but the British cannot deflect the fact that the human race is one body of people, that no matter our skin colour, no matter our personal faith, no matter where in the world we were born we are a part of a far bigger world and a far bigger society. Borders will one day fail as 'God' did not create them, fellow animals do not recognise them and we, with all the will in the world, will one day have the freedom of movement we were given from the day we started to walk this, our, Earth. One race. One planet.
