John Wetton
12 June 1949 - 31 January 2017
On the morning of January 31, I was sitting in heavy traffic on the way from one of the cases I work overnight to my son's place 40 miles from said location. It was then that I heard the news that John Wetton had died after a battle with colon cancer.
For those who don't know, John was a talented bassist and vocalist. He worked with such great prog rock acts as King Crimson and Uriah Heep. In the 1980's he formed the immensely popular supergroup Asia. He was an amazing, amazing talent, and, it would seem, a very nice person.
So why, you might ask, am I posting on this blog, which is ostensibly a blog about "supernatural" happenings, and not on a blog more geared to music, such as KHEL 666?
Because one of those interesting things that normal people call coincidences but which those of a mind know are not coincidences happened.
At the moment when I heard about John's passing, which had happened in the small hours of Tuesday morning and had just been announced, I was sitting at the crossroads of 67th Avenue and Big Busy Street. I felt an energy. It was a pleasant energy, perhaps even a joyful energy. I believe it was John, giving a tip of his hat to someone who needed a bit of confirmation and a bit of hope from the spirit world.
I honestly didn't know much about John as a person, but I could tell that he was a good person. He was one of those musicians who really didn't care for the spectacle, which is why he ended up being That Guy--you know, That Guy you know but you just can't place him. John was in it for the music. He didn't mind being That Guy.
Is John Wetton beautiful? Well, I could say "just look at that smile" and defy you to tell me that he isn't. However, he was beautiful in more important ways. He was a decent person who tried to make the world a better place during his life. That's something truly beautiful.
A salute to you as you travel to what's next, John. Thank you for being That Guy!
