Heeding Haiku With Carpe Diem: Senryu: Crystal Pond

death falls to darkness
or does the soul perhaps leap
to a crystal pond

Notes:
Today's Carpe Diem prompt involved revising this well-known Haiku by Matsuo Basho (1644 - 1694).

Today's Mindlovemisery's Menagerie prompt was crystals. We were asked to follow traditional Haiku rules, but, sorry, no can do when such a stellar Senryu using both prompts has hijacked my synapses!

I dreamed that my wonderful cat Trinity, whom I had to have put to sleep three years ago on November 9 due to brain and lung cancer, was here with me. November 9, 2016, was a garbage day in history. I lost my great friend on that day, and Lord Dampnut was elected "president." It was a terrible time to be alive.

She was such a special cat. I miss her big, chonky body, her big, chonky personality, and her big, loud purr.

30 Days of De-Objectification: Older Musicians

30 Days of De-Objectification:
Older Musicians

Here we are, back to the subject that kick-started the 30 Days of De-objectification series.
I find myself with more questions than answers.
Why do these girls think it’s okay to treat these men (or anybody) like sex objects?
How are they so completely lacking in empathy?
Have they never seen anyone grow old?
Has no-one in their life ever been critically ill?
Have they never had to watch anyone die?
If someone were talking about their grandfather the way they talk about these older musicians, would they really be okay with that?
Their attitudes are, frankly, sociopathic.
It’s not about them finding people much older than themselves attractive.
I’ve found many men who were significantly older than I was attractive.
My very first crush was Robin as portrayed by Burt Ward. I was six years old.
I didn’t see Star Trek in its first run, as I was born the same year that it was. I saw it in reruns at age ten and was smitten with Leonard Nimoy. I also thought that George Takei and Walter Koenig were cute.
In my early teens, I had a crush on Shaun Cassidy. However, I also found Gregory Peck very attractive, and he was old enough to be my grandfather.
My father loved big band and swing music, and I found the likes of Frank Sinatra, Stan Kenton, and Glenn Miller quite appealing in the looks department. Duke Ellington was suave. Nat King Cole had a kind, handsome face. Cab Calloway was cool.
It isn’t that I have a problem with the girls in question finding older musicians attractive.
I simply find the gross sexual objectification of these musicians incredibly disrespectful and the entitled insistence of these young women that they should be allowed to treat people any way they want without their behavior being questioned appalling.
I would never have said of the men I mentioned finding attractive “I want him to cum on my face and stick his dick up my ass.” I would have found it incredibly disrespectful to say such a thing. I would have been embarrassed to say such a thing.
I realize that I have had more exposure than most to the harsh realities of aging bodies, terminal illness, and dementia. I worked in long-term care for approximately 25 years. I would kill myself if I were ever diagnosed with dementia. Of all the ways to go, dementia is the absolute worst. One loses not only their physical abilities but their cognitive functions. Such a fate would be intolerable, and I won’t put myself or my son through it.
I had a stoic attitude about my work until I learned that Malcolm Young had been diagnosed with dementia. After that point, I kept seeing his face on my patients. Knowing what was going to happen to him made me feel sick. As well, my own father had died in 2010 after many years of physical and cognitive decline. When I went to work, it was as if I was detached from my body, floating a little above it, because I couldn’t bear to be present.
I thought about the fact that Malcolm had a granddaughter whom he would end up forgetting. I thought about how much his daughter loved him and how he ended up becoming her child in a way as his cognition declined. There are pictures of them together with her watching him. I know what she was thinking because it was what I was thinking about my father. I knew I would lose him, and I wanted to remember him.
On a physical level, I know what dementia does to the brain.
I have seen people die of cancer.
At one point when I was still a nurse’s aide, I worked with a patient who was a World War II air force veteran. He had a picture of himself in his uniform on his bedside table. He had been a very handsome man in his youth. When I was helping care for him, he had skin cancer which had eaten a hole in his cheek as well as metastasizing to his major organs. The cancerous area caused him a lot of pain and had to be cleaned several times a day. I remember one night when I came in to empty his catheter bag. He thought I was there to clean the wound, and he said “oh, please, Honey, do we have to do this? I don’t think I can stand it.”
I reassured him that I was only there to empty the catheter bag and told him that I’d ask the nurse if he could have something for pain.
This is the reality of terminal illness.
As we age, we become more vulnerable to the possibility that major parts of us will malfunction in critical ways. Telomeres shorten. Cells become more prone to mutation. Overall, we become more fragile.
When I see videos or old pictures of favorite musicians who have died, I feel as if I am looking through a telescope at some world light years away, which has, in fact, been destroyed. I want to save them, but I can’t.
I really can’t understand how someone can look at thirty, forty, even fifty-year-old pictures of these people and say, “I think I’ll write something crude about this aged or dead person now.” Because that’s not disrespectful and totally fucked up at all.
You can think (insert name of older or dead musician) is attractive all you want. There’s nothing wrong with finding someone attractive. When you erase that person’s entire being and see only fodder for your masturbation fantasy? That isn’t cute. It’s nasty.
I think that sums the matter up concisely.
Your porny posts about vulnerable aging people and those who have passed on aren’t sexy and edgy. They’re gross and disrespectful. Think about how the hell you’d feel if someone was talking about your grandfather that way and cut your nasty bullshit the fuck out.

The Cheese Grates It: I Just Can't Even With This Shit

Yep, this isn’t gross, disrespectful, or fetishizing at all.
Not like it totally ignores a person’s illness and suffering. Forget that. They looked sexy when they posed for a picture 50 years ago.
Yes, this shit actually is a problem. It isn’t cute or funny. It’s entitlement.
Let me break it down a little.

Here’s David Bowie. He was so very talented. He was kind and gentle. Yes, he was attractive. Shockingly, it is possible to find people attractive while still respecting them and not fetishizing them. This kind of becomes even more important when the person is no longer of this world.
David Bowie died of cancer early in 2016. But by all means, let’s fetishize and objectify him. Because that’s hawt.

Here’s a picture of a young David Cassidy with his brother, Shaun.
David Cassidy was very attractive.
He was also much more troubled than most people realized.
He developed dementia in his later years. This isn’t what killed him directly, although it eventually would have. He died from multiple organ failure. His last words to his daughter were “so much wasted time.”
That’s really fucking sad.
But, by all means, do continue to objectify him. Because your masturbation fantasy is far more important than showing respect for the dead, and it surely is not possible to find someone attractive without fetishizing them.

Malcolm Young wasn’t conventionally attractive, but there are certainly plenty of entitled individuals who see fit to fetishize him, even though his illness and decline were beyond tragic. For the past ten years, his brain was literally deteriorating, and, at the end, he didn’t even recognize the people who meant the most to him, such as his children and his siblings.
But, by all means, objectify the fuck out of him, because one time, nearly forty years ago, there was a picture of him that looked like this.

Don’t forget to fetishize his grieving brother too, even though he’s still alive. It isn’t like he’s a human being or anything. He’s there as fodder for your fantasy.

Since the grossness wouldn’t be complete if you weren’t fetishizing the entire family, here’s a picture of a youthful George Young back in the 1960′s. George died back in October. He was a really talented musician and producer. But who cares about that? He was sexy in his youth!

As an added bonus, you can fetishize Alex Young too. He died in 1998 from lung cancer. Suffering and death, that’s so hot. Particularly since it’s completely impossible to find people attractive without objectifying them.
The reason I find this sort of thinking atrocious is because it is rife with entitlement (my desires above everything else) while completely lacking empathy. It isn’t cute. It isn’t funny. It isn’t edgy. It’s perverse.
When I say “perverse,” I don’t mean sexually kinky. I mean it deviates from right thinking. By right thinking, I mean having an attitude of compassion towards others. Seeing others as objects to be ogled and utterly ignoring their struggles is sociopathic. It takes only your own desires into account. People become things. A world in which people are seen as things is an ugly world.

A Wicked Interesting Not So Wordless Beautiful Wednesday

John Wetton
12 June 1949 - 31 January 2017

On the morning of January 31, I was sitting in heavy traffic on the way from one of the cases I work overnight to my son's place 40 miles from said location. It was then that I heard the news that John Wetton had died after a battle with colon cancer.
For those who don't know, John was a talented bassist and vocalist. He worked with such great prog rock acts as King Crimson and Uriah Heep. In the 1980's he formed the immensely popular supergroup Asia. He was an amazing, amazing talent, and, it would seem, a very nice person.
So why, you might ask, am I posting on this blog, which is ostensibly a blog about "supernatural" happenings, and not on a blog more geared to music, such as KHEL 666?
Because one of those interesting things that normal people call coincidences but which those of a mind know are not coincidences happened.
At the moment when I heard about John's passing, which had happened in the small hours of Tuesday morning and had just been announced, I was sitting at the crossroads of 67th Avenue and Big Busy Street. I felt an energy. It was a pleasant energy, perhaps even a joyful energy. I believe it was John, giving a tip of his hat to someone who needed a bit of confirmation and a bit of hope from the spirit world.
I honestly didn't know much about John as a person, but I could tell that he was a good person. He was one of those musicians who really didn't care for the spectacle, which is why he ended up being That Guy--you know, That Guy you know but you just can't place him. John was in it for the music. He didn't mind being That Guy.
Is John Wetton beautiful? Well, I could say "just look at that smile" and defy you to tell me that he isn't. However, he was beautiful in more important ways. He was a decent person who tried to make the world a better place during his life. That's something truly beautiful.
A salute to you as you travel to what's next, John. Thank you for being That Guy!

Love,
Cie

Grief and Love, Worthless and Hollow as Myself

Missing Lafayette. Lost him July 17 of last year to kidney failure.

Missing Trinity. Lost her 13 days ago to brain and lung cancer.

Feel so sad about the way dementia has destroyed Malcolm Young’s mind so he “isn’t in there at all any more” according to his brother. Fucking dementia is the worst.
The 28th of this month will mark the 6th anniversary of my father’s passing after 6 years of decline both physically and cognitively.

You are forever loved, but my love is worth fucking nothing. It can’t save anybody, can’t bring anybody back. My love is hollow, painful, a worthless echo. I am so sorry. If I could trade I would.
