The Politics of Body Shaming

Naomi Wolf says in her book, "The Beauty Myth," A culture fixated on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, but an obsession about female obedience." In other words if people (women here) are always focusing on losing weight, they don't pay attention to bigger, more important issues in the world.

We need to find the strength within ourselves to focus on our importance. Once we do that, we take responsibility of ourselves. That puts the power in our own hands, taking it away from others. We should define ourselves. We can.

True. Sadly, I wasn't able to start living this truth until I was in my mid forties. I still obsess about my appearance much more than I should and I still don't think I'm attractive in any way, but I've learned to say "meh, so what?" rather than beat myself up for it.
